Culture is Learned

You aren’t born knowing what hipster culture is; you have to learn it! Whether it be from your parents, friends, internet, or even media, culture is learned.

As a child we are typically instilled with the thoughts and beliefs of our parents and siblings. How we are raised can strongly influence how we act as adults. In terms of a "hipster family", their kids would most likely live a greener lifestyle, have a greater appreciation for music, and dress in a laidback style because those were the beliefs instilled upon them from their parents.  Essentially, if you grow up wearing flannel and seeing your dad with a beard, you are more likely to be attracted to those same tendencies as an adult. To further prove this point, check out the popular tumblr site, "Dads are the Original Hipsters":

Additionally the environment in which we live is a major influence of culture. Take Austin, Texas, for example. With an unparalleled music scene, overall environmentally conscious population, progressive political views, and easily accessible Urban Outfitters or thrift store within city limits, Austin is very conducive to the hipster culture. With this subculture being extremely prevalent here, it is easy for others to learn about or even partake in the hipster culture. This brings up the notion of “cultural relativism”, which is a concept that one can observe other cultures without trying to decide whether their culture is superior or inferior to their own.

Hipster culture is being seen more and more through movies and television shows like Fox’s New Girl and ABC’s Happy Endings. These shows serve as another outlet for people to learn about the hipster culture. Zooey Deschanel is the main character in New Girl. She plays a hipster elementary school teacher who lives with three guys. In a clip shown below, Happy Endings actually explains how to be a hipster in one of their episodes.
